At Untersee, culture is at home

It is a centre of monastic work and a cradle of occidental culture, the elective royal home and an appreciated retreat for artists – the delightful countryside of the Untersee area at the western part of Lake Constance has cast its spell on people of the most diverse origin over the centuries. And even today, it knows how to spoil and enchant its visitors. It can do this through its history and can entice with interesting cultural routes.

The small medieval town of Stein am Rhein or Radolfzell at Lake Constance are testimonials of the past that have been preserved with loving care. From the castles and their gardens on the Swiss shore of the lake, you have a beautiful view of the lake and of the castles of the Hegau area.

In the 20th century, numerous visual artists were attracted to Untersee. Apart from Helmuth Macke, Max Ackermann and Erich Heckel, Otto Dix and Adolf Dietrich also lived here, whose former residential houses and studios you can visit today.
For visitors interested in literature, a visit to the two former residential houses of Herman Hesse in Gaienhofen is an absolute highlight, of course.
